Plainfield Country Club was originally founded in 1890 and is home to a timeless and nationally ranked Donald Ross golf course, later renovated by Gil Hanse. It is a true test of golf and should be on anyone’s must-play list.

The course starts out relatively tame, with a medium length slightly downhill par 4. It isn’t until you reach the green that you quickly learn that this course has some teeth. The greens are exceptionally fast, with some very significant slope so it is entirely possible to putt the ball completely off the green on many holes.

The par 3 11th is a prime example. The hole is only 135 yards long, but you basically have to land your tee shot in an area the size of a dinner plate. Anything short risks rolling off the front of the green into a deadly bunker. Long and over the green is even worse – there is no possible way to keep your second shot on the green.

Plainfield is a generally strenuous walk, but one that I thoroughly enjoyed.
